summer gardening!!

July already!!!

plants are happy happy happy with so much sun..... but they also want water... so we have been putting in good watering systems to help out the plants.

THe garden at the women's center has been busy with ART.

we made animals out of paper maiche to hang all over the garden- lots of colors and fun times.

we started with paper and designed our animals- we have a pig, a giraffe, a couple of elephants, a smake, a snail... and others. and then we cobered the paper with gluey paper to smooth the surfaces. THen we painted... and we are going to hang them all around the garden.

We also made little clay moasics to hang around the garden to make it look nice and make the people involved feel connected to the place. It looks nice.

We have a couple of different groups taking part int he activities- a handicapped group and a religious school group, and a college group and american volunteers.... lots of different people- it feels good to hang out there!

and the garden in the city park.. is moving slowly but surely. We are in the midst of creating a flyer to hand out to the neighboorhood to entice the residents to come help out and be a part of the garden project. We have some american volunteers coming to clear out the area of weeds. We also are going to write an ad in the local newspaper. We asked the city to support us and hopefully they will let us use the water in the area- paid for by the city!!! thats the best!!! they seemed to like the idea from the beginning so we are hopeful.

We also started another garden with an afterschool nature club. THey planted popcorn and okra and beans and squash. Cant wait to see how that looks as the summer continues!!!

thats it for now!!!!

may

Things are growing and changing.... as happens with gardens and plants....
our plants are growing and our roles in the community.
we have been attending community meetings... and are helping create a new kids playground in the PARK ZAHAV. very exciting... along with the community garden..... its been taking time deciding on a good location, there are pros and cons for every spot we look at....
we are also working on a new compost project in the city- hoping to get everyone involved in learning how to make compost...
its been frustrating recently becasue things take so long... but good to see the process: how long things really take, trying to get the community involved, helping them take on responsibility in starting these projects! we had a good talk with a group last week, people were able to voice their opinions about the projects and the process, it was important to hear. some people dont think a garden will work... but in the end we decided to continue with it and try.....

passover

well here in Israel... the passing over is here- passover.. so everyone is busy with their spring cleaning....
but we are still busy with our garden projects!!!
its super hot here now.. all of a sudden its amazing.

you can see the plants are loving it. all starting to bloom and full of new growth
.
we have a couple sites for gardens... and that is great. one is in memeroy of a soldier that died in the Lebanon war, in 2006. His family feels really good about doing this project in his name. Here in Kiryat Shemona it is a reality that many people have died.. and this is one way to bring the community together. The family says that he loved nature, so a garden is a good way to commemorate him!
and we have another site, that we are still finalizing, with a group of the community members, in a different neighboorhood. And we have weekly meeting to talk about how to make this garden a reality. We want to do it in the central park of Kiryat Shemona- Park Hazahav, golden park( san francisco donated money- hence the name, and there is a stream that runs through which is called golden stream... some nice coincidences!!!) anyway, the park needs some rejuvenation and we think a community garden might be the answer!!! so it is looking hopeful!!!

warmin up

written march 13, 2007
Amber:
well... the sun is out and the soil is warming up.... we are starting to plant some seeds.
this week was a new moon, a great time to plant. so we started some, cucumbers...special cool ones from india, some tomatoes, some eggplants, peppers... thats it for now.. we will let you know they are growing up!
Assaf:
The compost is looking better, as the weather gets warmer, the insects will start to work more and feel more comfortable playing around in all that old veggie stuff... so soon we will have some homemade compost to put with our garden!
Valery:
Along with the theme about the weather warming up, people are also coming out of their shells, more non-profits are talking to each other... it seems there is some talk of a green day soon here in Kiryat Shemona and lots of organizations are talking about working together...pretty exciting!
